Free Will and Predestination

BY JOHN OF DAMASCUS From “An Exact Exposition” a summation and synthesis of 8th Century church doctrine. Chapter 25. Concerning what is in our own power, that is, concerning Free-will. The first enquiry involved in the consideration of free-will, that is, of what is in our own power, is whether anything is in our power: […]

Calvin and the Secret Providence of God

by Richard A. Shaward I post this because I have come to admit that most modern “Calvinists” are not “PURE” “PRACTICAL” Calvinists. In my case, for 20 years I leaned to the more moderate Calvinism of Sproul. When have you heard, if you attend a Calvinistic church, this pure Calvinism from your Pulpits recently?  Here […]

On God Causing Sin

By Richard A. Shaward CALVIN : GOD DOES NOT JUST PERMIT SIN BUT WILLS/CAUSES/ORDAINS SIN “From this it is easy to conclude how foolish and frail is the support of divine justice afforded by the suggestion that evils come to be not by [God’s] will, but merely by his permission. Eclectic : deriving ideas from a broad and diverse range of Christian sources and Traditions.

Orthodoxy : correct, right or true things, from ὀρθός ‎(orthós, “correct”) + δόξα ‎(dóxa, “way, opinion”).

“No doctrine concerning the divine and saving mysteries of the faith, however trivial, may be taught without the backing of the holy Scriptures. We must not let ourselves be drawn aside by mere persuasion and cleverness of speech. Do not even give absolute belief to me, the one who tells you these things, unless you receive proof from the divine Scriptures of what I teach. For the faith that brings us salvation acquires its force, not from fallible reasonings, but from what can be proved out of the holy Scriptures.” Cyril of Jerusalem (ca. 313-386)
